LIFE ON THE FARM SERIES

We thought we’d share some of the video tutorials we’ve taken over the years.  My kids are not paid actors, nor am i a videographer, so please don’t expect Steven Spielberg quality.  These are just for fun, but it does give a birds eye view of what life is like on our farm.  Life can be fun, interesting, exciting, scary, sad and most of the time, hard.  The kind of hard that makes you lie in bed, feeling every muscle, and even though you know you’re going to be sore in the morning you feel accomplished at a job well done.

STEP ONE HOW TO TAP A MAPLE TREE

My son Kaleb made this film a few years ago.  He wanted everyone to know how to tap a maple tree.  It’s hard work!  During the months of January and February we’re in the woods cutting fallen trees, fixing lines, and tapping trees.  We do all this with about 40 pounds of equipment.  We each need to carry two large drills, 2 back up batteries, 100+ Spiles, a hammer for tapping and repair tools to fix tubing.  We carry this through over a foot of snow, sometimes in snowshoes.

STEP 2 PUMP SHACK

A pump shack is the 1/2 way point for the sap to travel.  It’s also the place to look first when theirs a problem.  If you look at the lines coming in you can tell which ones are having problems.

HOW TO PLANT AN APPLE TREE. THIS IS FROM A FEW YEARS BACK AND I’M FRUSTRATED TO SAY THAT WE ARE JUST SEEING APPLES!! NOT AS MANY AS I’D LIKE, BECAUSE THERE HAS BEEN A STEEP LEARNING CURVE LET ME TELL YOU. WE THINK WE KNOW WHAT WE’RE DOING NOW, SO MY FINGERS ARE CROSSED THAT A GREAT HARVEST IS IN OUR FUTURE. ORGANIC APPLES ARE NOT AN EASY THING TO GROW.
